Ironman Lanzarote Bike Disappointment - Post Race Analysis

Argon18 E-118. Originally I was using Vitoria Rubino Pro 23s then 25s I think, no problems. In 2018…Put on a GP4000s 25 the night before a race and suffered my first race flat. Replaced the tyres with new GP 4000s 25s And has another shoddy bike result, although horrendous weather may have masked the true cause. Then Lanza this year.

I may be late to the discussion here but here’s my take on your race data. Firstly, your race VI is high which is around 1.15 versus the 1.06 that BBS estimated. The thing is, it’s not normalised power that dictates the result or time of your split. It is your average power. I’ve tried using BBS before and after a few tries I noticed that it’s hard to hit a low VI especially on hilly races.

There may be other factors here but it’s the VI that struck me the most.

Those tires in a 25 tend to spread out pretty wide, especially with a wide rim. I have them on my road bike, they measure more like 27-28mm on the bike which is going to cause issues with a lot of tri frames. I’d go back to some 23s! Probably a bit more aero as well.
