Pacing Strategy of a Full Ironman Overall Female Winner on a Course With Major Elevation Changes

Interesting reading on pacing for IM.

Pacing Strategy of a Full Ironman Overall Female Winner on a Course With Major Elevation Changes

During the bike, velocity, power, cadence, and HR averaged 35.6 km·h−1, 199 W, 84 rpm, and 155 b·min

During the run, velocity and HR averaged 13.8 km·h−1 and 154 b·min

The point I find most interesting here is the riding cadence at 84rpm.

Why is that surprising? I was apart of a study at UW-Madison where tested economy at different cadences and rpms 50-70 trumped higher cadenced. Plus, change in elevation may include soft (zero) pedaling which will effect avg cadence.

Apparently not:

During the bike, velocity, power, cadence, and HR averaged 35.6 km·h−1, 199 W, 84 rpm, and 155 b·min−1, respectively, with minimal variation except for velocity

Without buying the paper I’d love to know what course that was. A variation in only 11W over “major elevation changes” impresses me.

Lake Placid.
