Ramp Test : Just Doesn't Work For Me

Sure, I think even some of the TR crew may be doing them that way.

  • Keep in mind that anyone on a standard (dumb) trainer will be doing that anyway.
  • Those with smart-controlled trainers have the option of ERG or Resistance.
  • If you are hitting the spiral of death, I don’t expect the change to Resistance will really help. You have to hold the power one way or the other.
    • The main difference is that with Resistance, you are able to “slack off” a bit and “get away” with it. The penalty is lower power output.
    • With ERG, you will be getting penalized by dropping cadence and “rewarded” with an increase in resistance. It leads to the clinch if you don’t respond and get on top of the cadence.

I’d suggest trying the Resistance option, but don’t assume that it will “solve” the problem. You may not hit the clinch, but you will be “capped” when you can’t keep the power or respond to the next step increase.

Let us know how it goes. I am curious to see the real results.

yep I felt that the ramp test over estimated. I prefer the 20 minute test but I’d like to know more about the differences between ramp,8 and 20min tests
