In a Cat 4 rolling road race, the pace tends to be one of surging intensities. What are your thoughts on using the “Criterium” Specialty Phase training block instead of the “Rolling Road Race” block?
The Rolling Road Race plan is designed to take into account these surging intensities, so you would likely be best served by the Rolling Road Race Plan.
The Criterium Plan is designed for races of about an hour with repeated 30-60 seconds surges. In a rolling Road Race, you are likely to see much longer surges than the Criterium Plan is designed to prepare you for.
I hope that makes sense, let me know if you have any further questions
Thank you for the reply. I notice that in my field of Cat 4 rolling road races, the surges are short (30sec to 60sec) similar to criteriums, which is why I was wondering. That being said, I will stick with the Rolling RR specialty phase when I get there in my structured training.
